Forklift Components in More Detail
A lift truck is constructed from numerous parts. The main parts that make up a lift truck are the truck frame, the engine components, the overhead guard, the wheels and the tilt cylinders. Furthermore, a forklift has a range of attachments. All the parts that make up a forklift are of equal importance because they work together to make the equipment's operation possible. The following paragraphs describe in detail some of the lift truck parts.
The Overhead Guard - this guard forms the forklift truck's metal roof. It sits over the cab area and protects the machine operator while he or she is sitting and driving. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck will harm the operator or damage the controls in the cab. The overhead guard is vital to the frame assembly on several units.
The Mast - Mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle, the mast is the vertical lift truck component made of interlocking rails. The mast enables the forks to move up and down while providing lateral stability. The interlocking rails may either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are two ways the mast can be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Lift Truck Carriage - the forks and other types of attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is connected to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is connected by chains. In order to allow the forks to be lowered and raised, the carriage can have either bushings or rollers to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - When the carriage is raised to full height, there is a back rest made of metal that prevents a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either welded or bolted on to the carriage.
Lift Truck Attachments - There are various kinds of attachments that could be fixed directly to the lift truck's carriage. Forks are the most common kind of attachment. Furthermore, there are rollers, rotators, L-shaped members, roll clamps, pole handlers and and all that. These different attachments are very handy for transporting different kinds of loads.
