Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks should be stored in a different complex or building in order to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks must be stored in a safe enclosure which could only be accessed by authorized employees. It is vital for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This task can utilize retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods could be utilized. It is also vital to have a fire extinguisher available at the refueling station. Additionally, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also has to be trained to use the fire extinguisher effectively and safely. When it comes to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everybody who is utilizing an industrial powered lift truck or forklift is trained correctly. This training covers both the hands-on training as well as the classroom portion. As soon as finishing the training session, the person must be tested in order to prove that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the correct method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also includes precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving and site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
There must be a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS center situated within the facility where the lift truck is operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all chemicals and solvents that are used on site. This will also cover the acid in the forklift battery, along with the propane that is used to refuel the unit.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all personnel at all times. Like for instance, if an exposure incident happens, the person needs to be evaluated right away. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Generally, if you are not certain if medical care is considered necessary, as a general rule; have a doctor examine the injury if you truly think it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
