A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machinery that is quite like a forklift. It enables the driver to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of equipment are mostly utilized in a warehouse environment. Most often they are utilized for transporting pallets and finishing certain tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines can be lifted up to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the required materials, are located on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform can be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker could be driven to its next load. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some companies may have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be used to complete these specific jobs at some companies instead.
