There are 2 general kinds of boom lifts. These units are articulated boom lifts and straight boom lifts. Usually, these units are powered hydraulically. Most commonly straight booms are the ideal option for tasks which require a high reach with no obstructions. The turntable on the machinery can rotate 360 degrees with an extendable boom. This extendable boom can be vertically raised to below horizontal. Because the operator could maneuver and steer the vehicle while the boom is fully extended, it is a versatile machine. These units come in 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive, as well as propane, gas or diesel configurations.
The articulated boom lifts are utilized for jobs which require to reach up and over obstacles in order to gain access. These specialized lifts are utilized for jobs that are not easily completed by straight telescopic booms. These lifts are practically identical to the straight boom lift in most aspects except in the ability of the boom to articulate. There are different articulation points on the boom in order to allow it to bend in a variety of different directions allowing it to move around any objects easily within the work site.
Some heavy-duty boom lifts come equipped with outriggers in order to maintain stability while the boom lift is completely extended. The outriggers provide the operator with some extra confidence and safety. Proper training is required before using boom lifts in order to guarantee the operator, the jobsite and everybody working in the vicinity stays safe.
Boom lifts enable jobs that used to need a lot more man power to be completed in a much shorter time period. These machines have greatly increased productivity and have changed the material handling business.
