Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is provided by huge industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures must be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the station should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Never permit objects like for instance matches or lighters to be used while an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging place correctly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
